My Process Drawing

Bio-object Exercise

Reflection

The reason I chose a Wellington boot for my bio object is because I had the idea in my head of the performance progressing further, and I visualised abandoned objects at the bottom of a river. Wellington boots are most commonly a lost item around rivers or deep water and there are many different portrayals of fisherman reeling in wellies from the bottom of water. My idea behind my movements was to take away the one thing that a Wellington boot does - stand on the ground. I referred back to the puppets and performing objects reading and the topic of object theatre so I could distinguish between the idea of an object and a prop. Objects are often created from the discarded leftovers of everyday life and I thought that fit in well with a wellie. I wanted to work outside the confines of ordinary life and explore into the imaginative processes of adult perceptions and try to create a form of life for an inanimate object. I wanted to explore with the idea of the object being light but also carrying a lot of weight, I wanted to show that it held a purpose even though it is incapable of “working” how it should. I believe it fit in with the idea of deception well because an audience would assume that a wellington boot is a small object which doesn’t serve a purpose without human aid, but i wanted to show it fighting against me to reach the water and to stand on its own and be capable of continuing a journey by itself. I explored more into the idea of “object - animation” which is the projection of life into an object. This is used to determine an object's characteristics and show its dramaturgical significance. The actor and the object must be very close and the actor must do everything possible to keep the object visible and this is what creates the bio object. I attempted to do this in my performance and I am aware that I could manipulate myself more to create a better connection with the boot. I did try to recreate my piece however I struggled a lot with my breathing due to my asthma so in future I think I would like to focus more on breathing techniques before I start, so as to make myself more capable of moving and creating a better performance.

In-animate sound audio

Reflection

I chose the idea of laughing and whispering because I feel they’re both deceiving sounds. Whispering reminds me of children and secrets and it’s always tempting to follow a whisper and see what’s happening and I felt like that fit in well with the box travelling towards the water. Laughter is primarily a sign of happiness and most people aren’t afraid of laughter however laughter can also be hurtful and trick you into a false sense of security which I also believed matched well with the box travelling towards the water in our performance. I tried to access a “darker” side to my speech but I found it difficult to appear menacing without coming across as too sarcastic. At time’s I found myself going back to my original piece of being nice and polite but then I think I found a way of incorporating that side of my voice into a more disturbing side in a way that complemented each other. In the future I think I would work more on using different levels of my voice to appear more “dark” and “ugly” and maybe try changing the words I was using. I did try to mix up the words myself to add the effect of disorientation but I ended up getting myself confused and sometimes tongue tied so that’s something which I would work on improving in the future.
